Origins & science
What are moldavites?
Moldavite is a natural tektite — a glassy stone formed approximately 14.8 million years ago when a large meteorite struck what is now the Nördlingen area of Germany. The intense heat and pressure melted both the meteorite and surrounding rock, scattering molten glass across a wide area.
This glass solidified mid-air and landed across Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic, where moldavites are found today. They are typically bottle-green to olive-green with a distinctive sculptured, wrinkled surface formed by millions of years of weathering.
Moldavites are found exclusively in the Czech Republic — primarily in South Bohemia around Český Krumlov, Třeboň, and Besednice, and parts of Moravia. The name derives from the Moldau River (Vltava in Czech).
They cannot be found anywhere else in the world. This geographic exclusivity is a key reason for their rarity and increasing collector value.
Yes. Moldavite deposits in the Czech Republic are finite and being depleted. Commercial mining has reduced available stocks significantly, and regulations on excavation have tightened. Larger and higher-quality pieces are increasingly rare.
This natural scarcity, combined with growing global demand, has driven prices steadily upward — making quality moldavites an interesting collectible and long-term investment stone.
Authenticity & quality
Buying with confidence
Surface texture — Real moldavites have a distinctively wrinkled, sculptured, or etched surface. Fakes are often too smooth or have a uniform moulded appearance.
Colour — Authentic moldavites are bottle-green to olive-green, sometimes with brownish tones. Neon green or unnaturally vivid colours are a red flag.
Internal structure — Held up to light, real moldavites often show bubbles, swirls, and flow lines. Fakes may look too clear or uniform inside.
Feel — Genuine moldavite feels like glass, not plastic or resin.
Certificate — The safest approach is buying from reputable sellers who provide verifiable certificates. Ours can be validated at naturalmoldavites.com/certificate-validation/.
Yes — every moldavite we sell is 100% natural and sourced directly from our own mining operation in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. We are not a reseller or middleman.
We offer certificates of authenticity for most pieces, verifiable on our certificate validation page. We are a top-rated seller on both eBay and Etsy with thousands of verified customer reviews.
Moldavites are assessed on surface texture quality, overall shape, size, and colour. On NaturalMoldavites.com we use grades including A and A+ for pieces with exceptional surface texture and condition.
Size is measured by weight in grams — larger pieces are proportionally rarer and more valuable. Specific localities such as Besednice command premium prices due to their distinctive spiky texture.
Besednice moldavites come from near the village of Besednice in South Bohemia, famous for their extremely pronounced spiky surface texture — earning them the nickname "hedgehog" moldavites (ježkové vltavíny in Czech).
This texture results from intense chemical weathering in the local soil over millions of years. Besednice moldavites are rarer and more sought after than typical rough moldavites, commanding a higher price per gram, and are highly prized by collectors worldwide.
Investment moldavites are large, high-quality, rare specimens selected for their long-term value. Key factors include exceptional size, outstanding surface texture, unusual complete shapes (drops, dumbbells, discs), and pristine condition.
As Czech deposits are depleted, prices for top-quality pieces have risen significantly. All investment moldavites on our site come with full certificates of authenticity.
Products & shop
Our products explained
A rough moldavite is the natural stone exactly as found — unaltered, preserving its original sculptured surface. Ideal for collectors and those wanting the purest natural piece.
A pendant moldavite has either been drilled (a hole is added for a cord or chain) or set in a metal mount — usually sterling silver or gold — to create wearable jewelry. All our moldavite pendants come with a certificate of authenticity.
Libyan desert glass is another natural impact glass, found in the Sahara Desert on the Egypt–Libya border, formed by a cosmic event approximately 29 million years ago. It is pale yellow to cream-white in colour and considerably rarer than moldavite.
King Tutankhamun's famous pectoral brooch contained a carved scarab made from Libyan desert glass. We stock select pieces at naturalmoldavites.com.

Care & properties
Caring for your moldavite
Moldavite is a natural glass with a hardness of approximately 5.5 on the Mohs scale — softer than quartz — so handle gently to avoid scratches.
Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. Store separately from harder gemstones (diamonds, sapphires, quartz). Avoid sudden temperature changes.
In crystal healing traditions, moldavite is often described as one of the most powerful transformation stones, associated with rapid personal change, heightened intuition, and spiritual awakening. Many people report physical sensations when first handling moldavite — warmth, tingling, or light-headedness — sometimes called the "moldavite flush".
These are personal, subjective experiences and not scientifically verified. Regardless, moldavite is universally appreciated as a rare natural gemstone with a genuinely extraordinary cosmic origin.
